Question:

Valve/cam timing on an 87' XR200R

Can anyone give me some info on setting "timing and clearances" on an 87 XR200R. I took it apart down to the piston and put it back together not knowing that I had timing and clearances to check. So I have to do it all again and hope I didn't bend valves or something. I know it would be of great help to have a shop manual, but unfortunately I don't have one.

I've done a lot of reading to try to make sense of repairing a bike, but this timing stuff is confusing me. So if anyone could give a newbie some info on what exactly I'm supposed to be adjusting regarding clearances and valves and what not that would be great. I don't know where to find timing marks, I looked on the cam sprocket but I don't see marks unless they're on the flip side and I put it on reversed? Am I supposed to be setting something on the sprocket, or the cams? both?

Even if nobody has info on my specific model, some general guidelines would be helpful too..

Thanks

  1. The shop manual is best. Be sure to back off the timing chain tension-er before removing the head and leave it loose until the head has been reinstalled. From experience, I trashed a Honda 100 head by not doing this.
