Question:

Valve cover smoking on 1999 Dodge Dakota??

I was thinking of buying a Dakota from a friend for about 900 bucks but when i took it for a drive i started smelling burnt rubber so i parked it opened the hood and there was smoke coming off the right hand valve cover.. also i don't see any leaking oil so im not sure what it is.. besides i smell burning rubber not oil.. there are hoses on top of it but they don't look like they are melted or melting.. anyone know anything about this or what is causing it?? i like the truck but id like to know what im getting into before i buy it.. thanks!

  1. valve cover gasket or your pcv valve on your valve cover needs relacement.


  2. It could be the valve cover gaskets but there will usually be a related oil leak in that case. There may be a hose or wire touching something hot so I would check for melting when the engine is cool. You should take it to a mechanic if you can't find anything obvious yourself.

  3. It smells like a gasket problem.

  4. you need to look and see if anything got down on the exhaust manifold on it,and the smoke is coming from that,there's not anything that i can think of that would get that hot on the valve cover to make it do that,id check it out real good before i bought it 900 is real cheap for that truck,make sure its worth buying,i got one now working on it and i didnt see anything on it that would make the valve cover smoke on it,good luck.
