It was Los Che’s second consecutive win against Osasuna in four days as they also came away with a 1-0 victory in last Saturday’s La Liga fixture.
Valverde appreciated his team’s win but said that they are not there yet. He mentioned that they have taken a major step to the quarter-finals, but still there is one more match to go.
“It’s a good result, no doubt, but nothing is decided. We have taken a step and given ourselves hope for the second leg. These results reinforce us going into Sunday’s game [against Rayo Vallecano].”
The former Olympiacos boss was pleased with the fact that his team managed to keep a clean sheet since his arrival.
“Yes, it is important not to concede in Pamplona and keep a clean sheet. And we did well in Lille. Having that positive impression will help us grow.”
Looking back on the game, the 48-year-old shared his thoughts on their opponents. He admitted that Osasuna managed to put his side on the back foot.
Los Che were strong in the second-half and played a solid back four. Valverde believes that it was his attackers who posed a great danger to Osasuna and they are the ones who made the difference.
Finally, the Spanish tactician warned his players of any complacency and urged them to keep their eyes on the ball when they meet them again at the Mestalla stadium for the second leg of the last-16.
“They started strong and pushed us. In the second half we were tight, but our attackers were more dangerous. We can never let our guard down against Osasuna.”
Los Che now seem to be stable and consistent. At the moment they are at the top half of the table as they sit on the 10th spot with 21 points.
