Question:

Vampires in Greek mythology?

I've heard that in Greek mythology, people with red hair were thought to be vampires after they died. First off, I was wondering if this was true, and if it is, can anyone tell me of a myth it would be in? I've been looking, but I can't find one.

  1. The Greek mythological vampire is very similar to the oriental vampire that can change shapes into various animals, And a can appear to you as someone you know and trust................ And there is no mention about hair color whatsoever.................................

  2. They were called the Lamia!

  3. I have never heard of that.  The only vampire I have ever come across in Greek mythology is the ghost in the amphora.  This myth is very obscure though.

  4. The closest I can come is in the Odyssey when Odysseus has to kill animals and let their blood drain into a trench.  The spirits of the dead show up to drink the blood and gain a temporary kind of solidity to them and answer his questions.  And in ancient Greek times there were spirits that haunted the battlefield waiting to tear apart dying soldiers called keres.  That's early Greek myth, we're talking the time of Homer and before kind of stuff.  In early Greek myth at least it didn't matter what kind of hair color you had - only if you had the proper funeral.  Spirits that didn't were trapped on this side of the River, forced to wander forever.  I haven't heard anything about red hair.
