Question:

Vampires in my office building lobby...?

There is a blood drive going on in my office building. Now I am a universal donor with type O blood. In the US men who have s*x with men are not allowed to donate blood regardless of their HIV status. I usually just tell them no I don't want to donate blood when they attack me at the door asking for a donation. But here lately I have wanted to tell them that their discriminatory policy regarding men who s*x with men is costing them a donation from a universal donor.

What would you do???

  1. I think that is insane!!! Think of how many injured people might not get blood. Is this a male/male only thing or do they forbid lesbians from donating as well? That is very bigot like and I do not agree with it. All blood donated goes through a strict screening process before given to anyone so if you have no ailments it should be allowed. I would tell them next time their policy forbids you from donating, but don't be so nice about it. Are they afraid to catch our g*y "cooties"? Or maybe it's because someone receiving g*y blood might turn g*y themselves, just like the vampire effect!!! LOL!

  2. tell them like that only with some sass!

  3. Tell them that their bigotry could be costing a life.  If you're clean and willing to donate you should be able to.

    Idiots.

  4. i'm pissed at them for that. then they leave messages on my phone about needing blood. idiots.

  5. Give! if they have a problem with your "lifestyle of choice" explain to them, in a way that I know only you can convey, they ARE discriminating and that with blood banks needing donations, they should be kissing your *** because you are a universal donor. Kick *** and start taking names. Would make a great law suit and case history.

  6. I have in the past donated blood, because I have a rare type (B-) and I know for a fact I have no contagious diseases, and anyway, isn't the Red Cross testing the blood ??

So, I don't care. I think it's stupid to turn away donors when there is so much need for blood.

  7. Don't tell them you did and just give blood. I had s*x with a g*y man and my blood is fine.  That is dicrimination.

  8. I would say that it's discrimination for them to not let men who have s*x with men donate blood. I would tell them that anyone, regardless of who they have s*x with, should be able to donate, as long as they are not HIV positive. Because if a man has s*x with other men, it doesn't taint his blood or anything and they are discriminating against g**s.

  9. Same happens where I work

I've told them the truth.  They've never bothered me since

(or try Garlic and a stake thru the heart)

  10. i have had that problem before. i usually say ok, have them sit me down, go through the questionaire, and then make them tell me each time about their policy. i figure it's kind of bad to waste their time, but at the same time it reinforces that their policy is discriminatory.

this policy is leftover from a time when it made good sense to exclude g*y men (80s and early 90s). back then, testing for HIV took a long time, g*y men were the huge majority of all HIV cases, and the cost of taking the blood (supplies) outweighed potentially contaminating the pool of blood. now, it's just a stupid leftover policy. several times people have tried to rescind it but it still remains intact.

  11. wow i didn't know that.  that is pretty s**+tty!

  12. Tell them it's against your religion.

  13. Tell that to them, but much ruder :)

  14. There is a blood shortage, and there are others that don't donate for relighous reasons.  Beggars really can't be choosers.  Oh well.

  15. I've never understood that. Of course the policy is discriminatory, completely arbitrary, and outdated (HIV+ heterosexuals can donate but HIV- g*y men can't?). But really, isn't it somewhat unenforceable? I mean, how do the blood drive people know if you're a man who has s*x with men unless you volunteer that information? If you want to donate and you're disease-free, just don't tell them that you are a man who has s*x with men.  Just donate.

If you're willing to out yourself in order to make a point about the absurdity of the policy, go right ahead.  But keep in mind that the people running the blood drive don't have any authority to change the policy even if they agree with you, so your complaint will have absolutely no effect on anything.  And if you're not out at work you might want to think twice about making a speech within earshot of your co-workers about how you're not allowed to donate because you're a g*y man.  Just something to think about.

  16. I would just tell them I'm septic.

    edit:

Or better still, I would say I have the Ebola or Marburg virius. That should make them go away.

    edit:

My blood type is A+ (same as my Dad's). My mother had the O bloodtype. =)

  17. throw garlic at them, screaming "back to the fires of h**l from whence you came, unclean creature of satan!"

they ought to get the idea.
