Following his move to United, De Gea was immediately compared to the former Dutch shot stopper and this saw his performance determinate rather rapidly.
However, as time progressed and the comparisons between the two decreased, his performances started to stabilize and improve.
Van Der Sar hopes that De Gea will be able to improve even further in the future and that the youngster doesn’t get phased by the comparisons between the two of them.
When talking about De Gea, Van Der Sar is reported to have said: "Maybe it was hard to follow in my footsteps. It can happen. People got compared to Peter Schmeichel, now maybe it's me"
"De Gea has to ignore that and just play his own game."
The former United keeper then went on to admit that even he made a number of mistakes back when he was coming up and that it took him a couple of seasons, before he finally settled down in the team.
As a result, he hopes for the critics and the fans to give De Gea some time, before they judge him.
Van der Sar continued: "He did get criticism last season but I made mistakes at Ajax when I was young, and also at Juventus and United.
"The main thing is how you recover in the next game, or the game itself. He did that. He became more important as the season went on and made good saves."
Despite starting off the Premier League season on the back leg, the keeper went on to improve his form as the season progresses and managed to go on and secure his spot as being United’s new number one.
The youngster has been selected in the Spanish provisional squad for the upcoming Euros and should he gain some experience from the competition, he could easily go on and improve his performances even further, while establishing his claim to being one of
the best young keepers in the world at the moment.
