Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart has returned home after completing a move to Hamburg, the club where he rose to prominence.
The German club announced the transfer on their official Twitter account with a picture of the midfielder wearing the number 23 jersey with the title ‘Welcome home’. The player signed a three year deal worth £10 million with the German outfit.
After major doubts about the player’s future at White Hart Lane, a deal has finally been completed which takes Van Der Vaart back to his former club.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas had himself stated last month that he had no intentions of selling the Dutch playmaker, and had also stated that he was very much still a part of his plans as the Portuguese hopes to win silverware with Tottenham.
However, a move to Hamburg became imminent when Spurs signed Moussa Dembele and Clint Dempsey from Fulham, leaving no place for the Dutch star in the Spurs midfield.
Van Der Vaart has been an immense figure for Tottenham ever since he joined the club from Real Madrid two seasons ago in a transfer deadline surprise move.
The midfielder took little time in settling into life at the Lane and quickly established himself as an important squad player. The Tottenham faithful took the Dutchman to heart and he became somewhat of a cult figure.
After a successful first season with the club, Van Der Vaart went on to build on it and scored a number of important goals for Tottenham. The player’s most important contributions perhaps came in the derby matches with local rivals http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429, where he tormented
the Arsenal defence and led Tottenham to a rare victory at the Emirates in the 2010/2011 campaign.
He was also very influential in Spurs’ first ever Champions League campaign, despite failing to take Tottenham through to the semi finals. Tottenham had earned a landmark victory against Italian giants AC Milan that season in the knockout stages of the tournament
but lost out to Real Madrid in the semi finals.
The player bid farewell to his Spurs fans through his Twitter account, saying:
"Of course I am sad to leave Spurs and especially all the fans which have been nothing but great.”
"Thanks to the best fans in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 for an amazing time."
Having scored a total of 28 goals in 78 appearances for Tottenham, the player will be missed and never forgotten for his important contributions for the North London club.
