Van Dijk wins Be The Influence Surf Pro, Coffey wins ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series Championship
Australia’s Nikki Van Dijk clinched top honours in the Be The Influence Surf Pro, third event on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Australasia Pro Junior Series, whereas her compatriot Ellie-Jean Coffey claimed the ASP Australasia Pro Junior
Series Championship after her runner-up finish in the event that went down at Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, Australia, on Saturday, July 13, 2013.
Van Dijk had exhibited a formidable form throughout the course of the event, putting on exquisite performance after another, as she gradually made her way through the field of exciting and talented up-and-coming surfers.
She was responsible for posting six of the top-ten wave scores during the event and did really well to maintain this ominous form in the finals, in which she found herself pitted against Coffey.
A series of powerful turns and gouges allowed the Phillip Island-native to get the better of her rival and consequently walk away with a well-deserved victory.
During her post-final interview, Van Dijk said that she is feeling really good and really looking forward to delivering a solid performance in the ASP 6-Star World Tour events, which will be arriving in the US and Europe soon.
Despite losing out to Van Dijk in the finals, Coffey had a big, wide smile on her face as she had just claimed the 2013 ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series.
“I’m happy with this year’s performance I made the final at every event,” Coffey said. “I just wanted to come and surf and have fun and that’s what I did and I ended up with the ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series Championship and a runner-up finish so I’m
really happy. It’s been a big week so I’m looking forward to going home and taking it easy for a while. This win is big for my career, and will give me a good seed in the ASP 6-Star World Tour events next year.”
The Gold Coast-based surfer was behind Lennox Head’s Stephanie Single in points prior to the commencement of Be The Influence Surf Pro. However, she successfully put on yet another great show and made it to her third finals in this year’s series.
Yet another runner-up finish earned Coffey just enough points to put her on top on the points table and thus sealed the fate of the series in her favour.
