The 2010 World Cup silver medalist's were among the three pre-tournament favourites to lift the trophy, with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904 the other two. However, things went extremely wrong for the Flying Dutchmen right from the start, suffering
a shocking 1-0 defeat to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Denmark-c2884 on June 13.
Four days later, Germany outclassed the Oranje with a 2-1 win while http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 sealed their fate on June 17 with an impressive 2-1 victory.
Following their disappointing European campaign, Van Marwijk faced severe criticism that led to his resignation.
Van der Wiel, who made his international debut against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Feyenoord-c39258 Rotterdam boss, was extremely disappointed with the departure of the 60-year-old tactician.
“It's a shame to hear that Van Marwijk has resigned as national team coach. I've had some beautiful and good years under him”, the highly-rated right-back stated on his official Twitter account.
The 24-year-old, who has thus far made 35 appearances since making his debut for the Oranje, went on to thank Van Marwijk for handing him his first international cap.
“I'm grateful that I got the chance to make my international debut under him”, Van der Wiel concluded.
Despite playing only a single match under the leadership of the Dutch mentor, the Moroccan-born Dutch footballer, AZ Alkmaar’s Adam Maher was extremely disheartened with the former Borussia Dortmund boss’ departure.
“A real shame, Van Marwijk quits as Netherlands coach. He was the one who gave me a chance [with the national team] and I enjoyed some great moments”, the 18-year-old midfielder said while talking to journalists.
The promising young midfielder was named in the provisional Dutch squad of 36 players for Euro 2012, and made his debut against Bayern Munich in an international friendly fixture. However, he failed to make it into the final 23-man
squad for the competition in Poland and Ukraine.
