Vance Worley pitches six innings as Philadelphia
Phillies beat Washington Nationals 7-4 – MLB News
Vance Worley had his career high seven strike-outs and Raul Ibanez made two runs and an RBI, as Philadelphia Phillies comprehensively beat Washington Nationals 7-4, at the Citizens Bank Park, on Wednesday. The win gives Phillies an unassailable 2-0 lead,
in the three game series.
Phillies won the first game of the series 4-1, on Tuesday, May 3.
Worley, who replaced injured Joe Blanton, has been impressive since his Major League debut on July 24, 2010. He has won two out of the three starts since his first appearance and is quite impressive, with 0.95 ERA. In his two starts this year, Worley gave
only one run in his 12 innings. On Wednesday, he allowed only four hits that cost him one run.
Worley, said, "I'm just trying to contribute the best I can. Some things are going my way."
Despite his impressive run this year, Worley is expected to go back to the Minors, once Blanton returns from injury. Nonetheless, he has done enough to impress manager, Charlie Manuel.
Manuel showed his satisfaction over Worley’s performance and said, "He's been very good. He has good stuff, keeps his composure and he's focused on what he's doing. He's shown he can pitch."
JC Romero replaced him with a one-hit scoreless seventh innings. Michael Stutes is yet to give a run in this season after another scoreless innings. Danys Baez had a bad day as he was homered by Espinosa for three runs.
Nationals’ starter, Jason Marquis, lost his first game of the season with his expensive five innings that went for seven runs. Marquis is 3-1 this season, with a 3.66 ERA. Brian Broderick, Sean Burnett and Todd Coffey followed him with three scoreless innings,
including a perfect eighth inning from Burnett.
