Vance Worley shines as Philadelphia Phillies defeat San Francisco Giants 7-2 – MLB Update
Rookie starter Vance Worley put in a brilliant performance as the Philadelphia Phillies comprehensively beat the San Francisco Giants 7-2 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Tuesday, July 26.
Without any pressure of facing the World Series Champions, the Major League’s current leader in wins, Philadelphia Phillies confirmed they have one of the best pitching staff ever in the history of the Major League Baseball.
After the Giants hitting powerhouse, Pablo Sandoval snatched a single in the top of the first inning, 23-year-old Worley exhibited strong mental control and managed to get the Giants under heavy pressure. The right-hand hurler allowed his second run on a
homer to Aaron Rowand in the eighth inning, but until now he has received full support from his batters.
"He did a real good job," Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel said. "He's aggressive and goes right at them. I think it does something for the guy."
Ryan Howard doubled to deep-right and Raul Ibanez splashed a 405-feet long three-run homer off the Giants’ starter Barry Zito to post a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior John Mayberry followed Ibanez with his powerful 413-feet long one-run
homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. Then Chase Utley touched an inside the park home run off Zito to cement a win for his club in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Howard again contributed with his 423-feet long one-run homer to finalise the 7-2 win.
Worley worked nine innings to take his seventh straight win, allowing only three hits, and one walk besides two runs. He also struck-out five batters over his 114 pitches to improve his record to 7-1 with 2.02 ERA in eleven starts this season.
"I'm not out there thinking too much," Worley said. "I'm just going with the pitches I had. He's really smooth back there. We were definitely both on the same page."
Zito went for six runs on six hits, walked two and struck-out four batters over seven innings to bear his third loss of the season. Guillermo Mota also allowed one run on one hit in the eighth inning.
"I skipped a couple of things but for the most part if you have an hour-and-a-half to get ready, you're going to be ready," he said.
Phillies are still in the leading position with 65 wins and only 37 losses while the Giants have 59 wins and 44 losses. In the next game, the Phillies will land with one of their strongest pitchers, Cole Hamels to face the Giants’ Tim Lincecum. According
to an expert, Lincecum does have the ability to outduel Hamels, but for this he will need a little back-up from the batting line-up.
