Vance Worley shines as Philadelphia Phillies humiliate Chicago Cubs 9-1 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ starter, Vance Worley had a notable day with his pitching as he permitted only one run on four hits with an ERA of 2.02 and gave the Phillies a 9-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Chicago on July 20.
Ryan Howard singled to left-centre field and Michael Martinez posted one run. Chase Utley put the second run for the Phillies when Shane Victorino grounded out to third base and Howard moved to second base. The Phillies took a 2-0 lead at the end of first
inning.
In the second inning, the Phillies’ batters accelerated their lead 5-0 by exploding three runs on their score-card. Jimmy Rollins doubled to deep right-field and Worley scored a single run. The second run was taken by Rollins on the single-run shot of Martinez
towards centre-field. Utley doubled off deep centre-field and Martinez posted the third run of the second inning.
At the bottom of the third inning, Brian Schneider doubled off deep centre-field and Domonic Brown added a single run to give the Phillies a 6-0 lead. In the fourth inning, the Phillies led off with 7-0 when Rollins scored a single run on the double-run
shot of Utley to deep right-centre. During the fifth inning, the pitchers did not give away any run.
Worley pitched eight innings and allowed just one earned run. He was able to strike-out seven batters and gave up two walks on his 111 pitches. Speaking to reporters, Worley said, “I started getting a little tired. I think the heat was more tiring than the
pitch count. I was fortunate to have a room down there that Cliff and Doc didn't have the last couple of days.”
During the sixth inning, the Phillies got an 8-0 lead when Rollins struck a solo homer (391 feet) towards right-field. On the other hand, the Cubs posted their first and last run at the bottom of the seventh inning to reduce their lead 8-1. Aramis Ramirez
scored one run when Geovany Soto hit a grounder towards third base.
Rollins struck his second homer (392 feet) of the game during the eighth inning to extend the Phillies’ lead 9-1. With this comfortable win, the Phillies were able to snatch the three-game series 2-1 at Wrigley Field.
