Vance Worley’s precision helps Philadelphia Phillies defeat Boston Red Sox 2-1 – MLB Update
Vance Worley put in a brilliant pitching performance as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Boston Red Sox 2-1 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, June 29.
The batters could not score freely in the nerve-racking encounter which was mostly dominated by the pitchers. In the end, it was luck which separated both sides.
Phillies’ starter, Vance Worley was magnificent with the pitching. Worley, still new in his career, recorded his third of the four career wins he now has. The capacity crowd cheered Worley as he pitched with great precision. His consistency was the major
ingredient as he conceding just one run off the seven innings that he pitched in. Worley threw a total of 116 pitches in the game yielding 82 strikes and five strike-outs. His ERA of 2.57 was exemplary, to say the least. The sole run came in the fifth inning
when Josh Reddick scored for Boston.
John Lackey was equally good for the Red Sox and matched Worley’s act, barring one extra-run that he leaked. Lackey threw 90 pitches off which 65 were strikes. He matched Worley’s five strike-outs but it was Raul Ibanez’s massive hit which made the difference
and Lackey lost his seventh game for the season, with only five wins thus far.
The Phillies opened the scoring in the second inning when Ibanez singled to centre, helping Shane Victorino complete his run. Reddick levelled the scoring in the fifth inning for the Red Sox. Both teams were in a fix in getting runs as Lackey and Worley
steamed in.
The ice broke in the seventh inning when Ibanez skied one hit to complete his ninth homer this season and 240th overall. The hit landed 387-feet away from the plate. It turned out to be the last run of the tight-scoring game as the relief pitchers
took over from the starters and followed suit with some clever pitching.
Michael Stutes and Antonio Bastardo pitched inning eight and nine respectively for the Phillies. Stutes managed to hold his fifth game for the season and Bastardo recorded his third save with an impressive ERA of 0.93. Both pitchers did not concede a single
hit.
Dustin Pedroia, the second baseman for Red Sox and the former Most Valuable Player (MVP) was all praise for the young, yet accurate Worley. He expressed that Worley is surely one for the future and his precision at such a young age is hard to cope with.
The Phillies are now on a roll for the season. They have won 51 of the 81 games played this season and with their bull-pen buoyant, this streak does not seem to end anytime soon. This win also ensures the Phillies of the series win, with the third game scheduled
for Thursday, June 30.
