Vancouver Canucks' Roberto Luongo's future still uncertain -NHL offseason Update
It is always hard to lock down a player for the next 10 seasons without giving proper thought to it, especially when your reputation has become of one that chokes under pressure. Same is for Vancouver Canucks’ veteran goalie, Roberto Luongo, whose future
is certainly in the lines of uncertainty at the moment.
Vancouver Canucks have not given any explicit statements on whether they want to let go of their veteran goalie or not, but signs have emerged from both ends about a possible trade at any moment. But due to the lack of interest shown by other teams around
the National Hockey League (NHL), Luongo is still in that loop of confusion.
Toronto had made statements about being interesting in getting a top-notch goalie that Luongo can be, but now when that moment to actually get into talks has come, Maple Leafs’ general manager, Brian Burke, sounds resistive on making a move.
“I don't need a goaltender until we play the first game,” Burke told reporters. “And we are far more comfortable with the guys we have than the media seems to be. If we can upgrade at a reasonable price, we will. I don't feel any pressure to [trade for a
goalie] now.”
According to Vancouver Canucks’ GM, Mike Gillis, there have been talks about trading the player but nothing certain has come around just yet.
“We're listening to a number of different situations,” Gillis said Friday, June 22, 2012. “I haven't made my mind up yet on what direction we're going to go. I think it's more prudent to be patient and make sure we're doing the right thing for our organization
and that's what we're going to do.”
One thing that has teams thinking twice about acquiring Luongo is his long-term, 12-year contract worth a mammoth $64 million dollar amount. There are still 10 years on that deal and not many takers.
Luongo has led Vancouver Canucks to the top spot in the league during the past two seasons and got them into the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals against Boston Bruins. Unfortunately, he choked in 2011 and this year as well as Vancouver had to bring in backup Corey
Schneider during the quarterfinals.
