Vancouver Canucks' Ryan Kesler has shoulder surgery, out for six months -NHL Update
It looks like Vancouver Canucks will be unfortunately be making another start to a National Hockey League (NHL) regular season without Ryan Kesler as the centre player underwent shoulder surgery and is most likely to miss the next six months recovering.
Six months will be meaning that Kesler will not be joining the Vancouver Canucks for at least a month when the 2012-2013 NHL regular season kicks off.
Vancouver Canucks general manager, Mike Gillis, made the announcement about Kesler on Tuesday, May 8, 2012.
"After consultation with our team physicians following the playoffs, it was deemed that Ryan would require a procedure on his shoulder," GM Gillis said in a statement. "We expect a full recovery and determined this procedure would best serve the team's and
Ryan's long-term goals."
Due to a number of surgeries and injuries including a recent one on his hip, the player has been unable to perform to his maximum, which ultimately hurt Vancouver Canucks in the playoffs despite winning the Presidents’ Trophy for the second straight year.
"I'm not going to make excuses," Kesler said after the season ended. "I wasn't good enough down the stretch."
The 27-year-old played in 77 games for the Vancouver Canucks last season after he went out with the injury and put up just 49 points (22 goals, 27 assists), his lowest since 2008 in which he put up 37.
A full six months are expected to give Kesler more than enough time to fully recover and give his all with Vancouver next season, which will be the third last on his six-year contract worth $30 million.
Kesler underwent a shoulder injury for what was reported to repair a torn labrum, with which he had been playing with for the last portion of the regular season but was forced to miss the final five games due to it nagging him too much.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Anthony Miniaci at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Sports Health in Ohio, USA.
According to Dr. Miniaci, Kesler is expected to make a 100 per cent recovery and will be able to go fully prepared in the upcoming regular season.
