Vancouver Canucks' goalie Roberto Luongo out with undisclosed injury, return date not set-NHL Update
There is no doubt that the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Final contenders, Vancouver Canucks, are struggling in the season thus far and have seen much, much better days, but as the news broke about Roberto Luongo’s undisclosed upper-body
injury after their Sunday night matchup against the New York Islanders, a lot of speculations started to fly around the league.
Many analysts even went to the extent of terming the decision to sideline Luongo for their next matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks, which they have lost 5-1, just a way of getting him out of the net for a while in order to rest.
The Canucks, who led the Western Conference last season along with the league with the most points, currently stand at number 11 in the division with 19 points and are still under a number of teams which were considered weak earlier.
Seeing things like that, hearing different speculations as to why Luongo’s mysterious upper-body injury might not have been disclosed is not that hard to believe.
"You know, with the goalie situation right now with what happened in the Buffalo game there, I am going to just say it is an upper-body injury right now", Vancouver Coach, Alain Vigneault, said.
Adding Ryan Miller’s situation into the story, Vigneault, might have given a hint at his goalie being injured due to hit he might have sustained during their the last contest he was present in.
Vigneault also added that the league is still unclear on what and how players can interact with goalies on the ice, which might be another reason to keep Luongo off the ice for the time being in order to save him from some possible damage until and unless
a clear description and set of rules are put forth.
"We're not quite sure what's allowed with the goaltenders and what's not allowed, so we'll leave it at that", Vigneault added.
It is still unclear when Luongo may make a comeback, but it is reported to be said by the Vancouver management that he might be debuting sometime next week or so as soon as the situation clears up.
