Vancouver Canucks’ Alex Burrows quick overtime (OT) goal in Game 2 against Boston Bruins only seconds shy of new record
Alexandre Burrows led his team, Vancouver Canucks to a major victory in Game 2 of the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Finals on Saturday night at the Rogers Arena with his quick overtime goal, but it wasn’t quick enough to beat the record for
the fastest overtime goal.
The 30-year-old left winger from Pincourt, Quebec, Canada, answered back in a profound manner after nearly being suspended for biting a player in the previous game during a brawl.
He scored the first goal of Game 2, a little over midway through the initial period, which certainly gave Canucks a much needed lift to keep fighting in the game.
Daniel Sedin’s equalising goal in the final period after Boston’s two goals in the second sent the game into overtime and it was Burrows who made the game-winner in the first 11 seconds of overtime with a quick turn on Bruins’ goalie, Tim Thomas.
Burrows fired off on a breakaway after the first faceoff of overtime and fought through a couple of Boston defensemen, deflecting Thomas to bring him out of the net and curling around the net to shoot the winning goal while being chased by Zdeno Chara.
"As soon as I got the puck, I knew I was going to fake a shot and then try to beat him", Burrows said. "I lost the puck in front of Tim Thomas, but I got it back, and I got it in".
Burrows’s lightning fast overtime goal was the second fastest Stanley Cup Finals goal in history, short of breaking the record by only two seconds.
Montreal Canadiens’ Brian Skrudland still maintains the record for the fastest goal in playoffs history as he scored the winning OT goal against Calgary Flames only nine seconds in. It was nearly 25 years ago in 1986 that Skurdland lifted his team to a 3-2
victory with his record-setting goal.
Alex Burrows will certainly remain a dominating force for Canucks, now going out to Boston to face Bruins in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Monday.
