Vancouver Canucks Chris Higgins not planning on going to Europe just yet -NHL Lockout Update
Young goalie, Cory Schneider, finally put the Vancouver Canucks on the long list of teams that have players participating with foreign teams abroad during the lockout, but his teammates are just not quite ready yet to make the jump.
Schneider, knowingly that goalies have always faced a much harder time in finding valuable opportunities during a lockout due to the limited positions available, took the chance when he saw it and the others just might have to if a whole season is cancelled.
The National Hockey League (NHL) and Players’ Association hoped that federal mediators interfering in their affairs to settle a labour dispute would work out, but unfortunately, it met the same fate that experts had feared.
One of the major factors that is keeping Higgins from playing outside of North America is the chances of getting injured and having to rehabilitate if a season does get going, which would obviously mean the Vancouver Canucks would miss out on a key player. The only case which would force him to leave the country is when a season is thoroughly cancelled and there is no other hope in sight.
“No, I am not looking for a place to play,” Higgins said Thursday, according to VancouverSun.com. “I don't think I could live with myself if I got hurt over there, God forbid. I'd rather be a little out of game shape than be coming back hurt. So that's how I kind of look at it. I hope for the best for the players already over there.”
Despite the deadlock, staying right where he is for the time being is what Higgins considers being the best option.
“As grim as the outlook is, it's still fun to be out there with them even if it's just four of us. I also keep thinking we're just a week away, just a week away, from getting this thing settled.”
Chris Higgins is a 29-year-old native of Smithtown, New York. The left winger was drafted 14th overall by Montreal Canadiens during round-one of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and boasts 482 games played with 239 points (123 goals, 116 assists).
