Vancouver Canucks Manny Malhotra could be Gone after Lockout -NHL Update
If anyone has learned anything from previous lockouts in the National Hockey League’s (NHL) history, it is that a lot of players suffer from the wasted time and are just unable to get back into form after an entire season slips right out of their hands.
Manny Malhotra, a veteran forward of the Vancouver Canucks, seems to be one of those NHLers that just might not be coming back next time around.
121 players were sacrificed following the previous lockout of 2004-2005, which is a significant number and it is prone to happen again as this time around, things are not looking any better with the NHL determined to get the players to agree with them.
“I haven’t looked that far down the road,” Malhotra said Tuesday following another lockout skate with the UBC Thunderbirds, according to the Vancouver Sun. “I remain optimistic that something will get done and we will have some sort of season.”
“It’s pretty evident to us they’re on their own agenda and this is going to end when they feel it’s going to end,” added Malhotra, who is also an active member of the NHLPA. “It’s frustrating and sad, really, that running a $3.3-billion industry they only
have one idea and one tactic as to how to get a deal done.”
There is no doubt that Malhotra is one of the most dedicated players in the NHL and for the Vancouver Canucks, but seeing how he has gone through a number of toll taking injuries throughout his career, a wasted season could mean everything. He has just one
year left on his three season long deal with Vancouver Canucks, which has a total value of $7.5 million and with that going down the gutter with the season, continuing to negotiate could be a tough process.
Malhotra is a 32-year-old native of Missisauga, Ontario, Canada, who was picked up by the New York Rangers as the seventh overall back in 1998. He has experience playing with not only the Rangers, but also the Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets, San Jose
Sharks and Vancouver Canucks and seeing him go would definitely be devastating.
