Vancouver Canucks acquire Steven Anthony after he led Sea Dogs to Memorial Cup Victory –NHL Update
A day after Steven Anthony led his team, St. John Sea Dogs, to victory in the MasterCard Memorial Cup Final of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), Vancouver Canucks has acquired his services to play in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a part of their team.
The 20-year-old from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada was drafted by Canucks in the seventh round and as the 187th overall pick during the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
He remained a part of St. John Sea Dogs, a major junior hockey team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), until he has finally been signed by Vancouver now.
Steven Anthony, a left winger, has played four seasons with Sea Dogs in which he registered a total of 66 goals and 97 assists.
In the 2010 regular season, Anthony picked up 23 goals along with 37 assists in 61 games and five points in the playoffs which ultimately helped him in leading Sea Dogs to win the Memorial Cup for the first time since it’s the franchise’s inception six years
ago.
During the 2010-2011 pre-season, Anthony played in his first NHL game with Vancouver Canucks in September at the Scotia Bank Saddle Dome in Calgary, Alberta, and had four shots on goal.
The young Sea Dogs’ forward was also named as the TELUS Offensive Player of the Week during the 2009 season in the second week of January.
In the four seasons Anthony has been playing for Sea Dogs, he has been recognised for his offensive intelligence and knowledge of moving the puck out of tense situations in front of the goalkeeper, be it in his own or the opposing end.
His contribution to one of Canada’s top team, Vancouver Canucks, is expected to greatly benefit his style of playing.
Currently, Canucks is on its first Stanley Cup stretch ever since joining the National Hockey League (NHL) over 40 years ago. It is not clear if Anthony will be joining the team immediately but it is most likely he will start playing in the major league
next season.
