Vancouver Canucks claim RW Dale Weise off waivers from New York Rangers -NHL News Update
It did not take long for 23-year-old Dale Weise to get picked up after being placed on waivers by New York Rangers earlier in the preseason, as Vancouver Canucks claimed the free player on Tuesday, October 4, 2011.
Not impressed by his performance during training camp and his participation in a few 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) preseason matchups, New York Rangers were forced to cut the player, thus placing him on waivers on October 2.
Weise is currently signed on to a one-year, two-way contract worth an estimated $605,000 coming out of a three-year, entry-level deal worth $1.735 million which he signed after being picked up as the 111th overall pick during round-four of the
2008 NHL Entry Draft by New York.
Vancouver Canucks on the other hand, made the move after placing one of their own players, fourth-line forward, Victor Oreskovich, on waivers, who could return to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliates, Chicago Wolves, if he does not get picked up
by any other major league franchise.
For Vancouver head coach, Alain Vigneault, Weise is a player who he does not really know anything about and depended solely on his team scouts to pick him up regarding him as a valuable backup addition to the club.
"I don't know the young man at all so I'm going with my pro scouts' opinion right now", Vigneault said. "They're pretty happy with the pickup. They say he's a little bit busier on the ice, plays with a little bit more energy and is little bit more physical.
His hockey sense, from what I understand, is good. Our guys seem to think he's an upgrade and that's why we decided to go that route".
The deal came out successful after a year Vancouver had tried to acquire him but failed to do so.
For Vancouver Canucks, his ability to score goals and put up big penalty numbers is a valuable trait since the 2011 Stanley Cup contenders lack in the physical category of the game.
More developments on the issue are expected in the upcoming days as Vancouver Canucks prepare to kick of the new 2011-2012 regular season and decide whether to use the Winnipeg, Manitoba native or not.
