Vancouver Canucks disregard any report of Trade with Toronto Maple Leafs for Roberto Luongo -NHL Update
Days after rumours began to emerge about the Vancouver Canucks having sealed a deal with Toronto Maples Leafs on the issue of a trade for veteran goalie Roberto Luongo, the former came out on Friday, October 19, 2012, to explicitly deny any such planning
going on.
It was Sportsnet’s John Shannon who reported the news officially through his source that the Maple Leafs and Canucks were awaiting a new labour deal to be reached in order to go ahead with the trade, but it was Vancouver Canucks general manager, Mike Gillis,
who termed it to be not on the table.
The GM even came out to let the world know that they have not closed the door on the option of keeping Luongo on the squad and will do so if needed at the end of the day. The only reason they would do that is obviously in case of not being able to secure
a valuable deal, but experts see them as continuing the negotiation process with various clubs to see what would benefit them the most.
“The definition of close is different for everybody,” Vancouver GM Mike Gillis told the Vancouver Province and TEAM 1040. “I’m not sure why John would say that because that’s certainly not the case. Everybody is also entitled to speculate on whatever they
want to speculate on. “We’ve moved very slowly on any discussions with Roberto — we’ll trade him when we get want we want to get for him, or we won’t trade him, and either way it’s fine with me.”
It was also speculated that Maple Leafs goalie, James Reimer was trying out with Vancouver as a test run, but nothing has been confirmed on that part as well. Both teams are without a doubt waiting for a new CBA to come into force so that dealing with updated
terms and conditions might be an easier ordeal for the stakeholders instead of having to rush to conclusions.
Updates should be expected only when the lockout comes to an official end and anything before that would be pure speculation. It will certainly be interesting to see where Roberto Luongo eventually turns out playing.
