Vancouver Canucks edge Minnesota Wild 3-2 in Overtime -NHL Match Update
Vancouver is finally beginning to look like they actually participated in the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Finals by winning their second straight of the season against Minnesota Wild, 3-2, in an overtime decider, on Saturday, October 22,
at the sold-out Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
After bouncing back against Edmonton Oilers earlier on Thursday during a shootout to win, 2-1, snapping a two game losing streak, Minnesota lost another contest, which could have moved them up to the third number spot in the Western Conference under Detroit.
"We're still not completely comfortable in those moments when the game's on the line, playing in your own zone you still get a little bit frantic sometimes", Wild coach, Mike Yeo, said. "We're not the only ones. We made them look like that a little bit too
and that's the team that won the Western Conference championship (last season). I think there's a lot more to build off of in a positive game from this game than there is in a negative way".
Devin Setoguchi scored his third of the season nearly midway through the first taking the lead for Minnesota.
Daniel Sedin potted his fourth and levelled the matchup by taking opportunity of their third power play advantage during the final minutes of the second period.
Kyle Brodziak made the tie-breaker and put Minnesota ahead once again nearly two minutes after Sedin potted the equaliser sending a fired up crowd into sudden silence.
Minnesota was entering the final period in hope of winning two more valuable points to move them up in the conference, but it was Jannik Hansen who fired his first of the season, 2:06 into the third to force overtime after Minnesota failed to answer.
With 1:21 remaining in overtime and potentially heading to an uncertain shootout, Sami Salo took advantage of Dany Heatley’s penalty where he was booked with a minor for slashing, taking a slap shot, firing the puck through Minnesota goalie, Niklas Backstrom,
for the win.
Vancouver Canucks play Edmonton Oilers for their last away game of the month on Tuesday while Minnesoita returns home for the final two against Anaheim Ducks on Thursday and Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.
