Vancouver Canucks’ forward Mason Raymond to miss 3 to 4 months after hit in Game 6 –NHL Updates
After a scary moment for Vancouver Canucks where its forward, Mason Raymond, lied motionless in Game 6 of the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Finals’ series, the worst has happened as the team has announced that Raymond will not only miss the
last game of the series but also it could take 3 to 4 months for a full recovery.
It was not an ordinary injury that Mason Raymond sustained. There were many speculations that he might not even be able to walk again.
"There was some very serious concern about that", Vancouver’s president, Mike Gillis, said. "When you see the severity of that injury, the way our doctors described it to me, very, very dangerous. ... It wasn't a chipped vertebrae or cracked vertebrae. It's
broken through the belly of his vertebrae, so it's a very serious injury. You never want to see any player on any team have an injury like that".
In the opening 20 seconds of Game 6 in Boston, Mason Raymond was checked byBruins’ attacker, Johnny Boychuk, into the backboards in Bruins’ defensive end.
The hit did not seem so hard, but when Raymond was seen lying lifeless on the ice face first, it was a sign that something was seriously wrong. His teammates helped him up, but he was unable to walk and was taken out to the hospital on a stretcher.
Mike Murphy, the NHL in-charge for discipline during the Stanley Cup Finals’ series, who also announced Aaron Rome’s suspension, talked to the press after the hit took place.
"We do not feel this play requires discipline", Murphy wrote. "It was an awkward collision that caused Raymond's injury. Very unfortunate".
Vancouver Canucks’ president, Mike Gillis, has alternate views on the hit.
He termed the hit as unnecessary as he did not see the puck around him and said that the hit was forceful enough to seriously injury his back which it did.
It is still unclear how Mason Raymond’s absence will factor Vancouver’s game-play in Game 7 but it is clear that Canucks will not be having his services for at least a few months and maybe even the beginning of the new season.
