Vancouver Canucks lose matchup to San Jose Sharks along with Steven Pinizzotto, Aaron Rome
San Jose Sharks extended their perfect game record by defeating Vancouver Canucks, 4-3, on Sunday during their fourth 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) preseason matchup, but that was not the only things the former Stanley Cup contenders lost that night.
In two separate incidents, Vancouver Canucks faced a major setback for future contests as 27-year-old enforcer, Aaron Rome and prospect forward, Steven Pinizzotto, both were taken out of the game with respective injuries sustained during game play.
Aaron Rome broke his hand while trying to block a shot during the second period and did not return to play. At the moment, there is still no confirmation by the team as the evaluation process is still underway.
"He ll be re-evaluated tomorrow, but obviously it's going to be some time, Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said of Rome's injury.
On the other hand, Pinizzotto is also under observation by team medical staff and is yet to have anything confirmed.
"He'll be re-evaluated, but I think they announced it was dislocated", Coach Alain Vigneault said of Pinizzotto after the game. "He fell awkwardly there. It's unfortunate, we'll know more in the next couple of days how long it's going to be, but it should
be a while. . .It's hockey, it's life, some stuff happens".
San Jose was ahead at the end of the second period as Brad Winchester scored once and Tommy Wingels potted the puck twice in the first 40 minutes to give them a 3-2 lead as Vancouver’s Alexander Sulzer and Cody Hodgson had respective goals.
There were over eight different penalties given in the second period alone as Winchester faced two minutes for boarding, Dan Boyle a minor for roughing and Antoine Roussel along with Douglas Murray, a five minute major for fighting.
Andrew Desjardins made the game-winning shot for San Jose a little over midway through the final, but Vancouver nearly levelled the game as Nolan Baumgartner lessened the gap to one with 2:57 remaining during a power play.
Vancouver missed eight added man power play opportunities throughout the match, which could have been the turning point for the team.
San Jose and Vancouver will face-off once again on Thursday, September 29, this time on Sharks turf.
