Vancouver Canucks loses Aaron Rome for Stanley Cup Finals after a hit on Boston Bruins’ Nathan Horton
It was a crucial moment on Monday for both Stanley Cup finalists when Vancouver Canucks’ defenseman, Aaron Rome, made a hard hit on Boston Bruins’ right winger, Nathan Horton, sending him out of the game on a stretcher in the first period of Game 3.
The Boston fans were extremely joyous about their team returning home for the Stanley Cup Finals, an event the city is witnessing after nearly 21 years of struggling.
They were shocked as they saw 26-year-old Nathan Horton lying lifeless on the ice after being hit, head on, by Cauncks’ Aaron Rome in the first five minutes of the game.
"I take it very seriously, very seriously," said National Hockey League’s (NHL) vice-president, Mike Murphy, in-charge of discipline during the finals in Boston. "Guys play all their lives to get to this series on both teams, and you might never get back.
So I take it very seriously. I do not make light of this”.
Unfortunately, both players will remain out of the historic series between the two teams since Rome has been suspended for the remaining four games and Horton has been declared unfit by the medical staff due to concussion related problems.
Certainly, Canucks and Bruins will feel the absence of both players in their respective defensive and offensive ends.
Rome was a huge contributor in Canucks’ back-line as Vancouver has always lacked behind in defence so this will be another major setback to the team.
Horton was a big-time scorer for Boston Bruins who need good offensive attackers now more than ever.
"We totally disagree (with the suspension)", said Canucks forward Daniel Sedin about the NHL’s decision to suspend Rome. "We support Rome. He's a hard-working guy. He has no intention to hurt anyone out there".
Now that the final decision has been made, it is extremely improbable that any revisions would be made since Horton is out and it would only seem unfair to Boston Bruins and its fans, if the disciplinary committee allows Rome to participate in any of the
remaining games.
The series will continue on Wednesday, June 8th, when both teams meet up in Boston for Game 4 of the 2011 NHL Stanley Cup Finals.
