Vancouver Canucks offensive line-up shines, burnout Calgary Flames 5-1 -NHL Match Update
Vancouver’s offensive line-up shined brightly by potting five shots on 18 attempts during the first two period as the Canucks burned out the already dim Calgary Flames, 5-1, Tuesday night, November 1, 2011, at the sold-out Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary,
Alberta, Canada.
Both Canadian teams have not gotten off to a good start ever since the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season began but Vancouver received enormous criticism, which could not be denied after coming out as one of the Stanley Cup finalists earlier
this year.
Playing against Calgary was not easy seeing goalie, Miikka Kiprusoff, in the Flames net, but Vancouver Canucks took good chances when the time was right instead of just showering pucks everywhere.
"It's about playing the right way", Canucks coach, Alain Vigneault, said. "Our guys are trying real hard around the other team's net. Net presence, going there, and we've been able to beat two pretty good goaltenders”.
Christopher Higgins inaugurated the scoring with his sixth of the season nearly midway through the first. Alex Burrows followed with another to extend the lead as Calgary gave the Canucks a 5-on-3 man advantage with Rene Bourque and Chris Butler facing penalties
only seconds apart.
The Flames fell short another man, Roman Horak, with a little over 30 seconds remaining in the period and Daniel Sedin made sure he did not let the chance out of hand by potting his fifth of the season, giving Alexander Edler his second straight assist.
Roberto Luongo played straight through the match for Vancouver and had his teammates confident with his abilities.
"He's one of the best goalies in the League", said Edler. "It's unfortunate about that last goal, but we know he's good and that makes us feel comfortable playing in front of him".
Vancouver managed to kill off three penalties in the second period while Cody Hodgson and Alexander Edler scored back-to-back to secure the match and force a comfortable period, 5-0, in their favour.
Alex Tanguay scored Calgary’s only goal with 32 seconds remaining in the final period and being down by four, the crowd had realised that their home team was bound to lose.
Calgary Flames have the next three games on the road, starting off with the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, While Vancouver Canucks will pay a visit to the Minnesota Wild the same day.
