Vancouver Canucks protest lockout by playing in inside out Jerseys -NHL Update
While the players of the Vancouver Canucks are not technically employed by the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise anymore after the lockout officially came into play on September 15, 2012, there are ways to record a protest and they know how just to
get it done.
Instead of not playing in their team jerseys at all, players of one of the leading NHL teams decided to continue wearing their jerseys, but instead, there wore it inside out to make a bold statement about not having to depend on their club to represent themselves.
All players have an identity in the NHL, but this time as they were skating together at t UBC’s Father Bauer Arena in Vancouver on Monday, they were not representing the Vancouver Canucks.
“I don’t know who the first guy to do it was, but we’re no longer employed by the Canucks so we’re not going to be representing them,” said defenseman Kevin Bieksa, according to the VancouverSun.com. “It’s not a big deal. I think somebody actually said they
preferred that we had it inside out. I don’t care either way. Still got the Canucks’ (logo) on the pants and the helmet. Who really cares.”
While players from all over the NHL have already moved on and have signed contracts with foreign hockey clubs, most of the Vancouver based players are still waiting over what they should do.
For Bieksa, it is still too early to start negotiating as there is still time before an NHL season is to come into play, but it is also expected that they will start moving out once the lockout moves into the scheduled season time.
“I think it’s too early to talk about that,” Bieksa said. “It’s in the back of everybody’s mind, I think. I don’t think too many people want to miss an entire season of hockey.”
Most players have an idea of where they just might be headed when the time comes, but until then, there is still hope of a hockey year starting off on time as the NHL and Players’ Association gears up to meet on Wednesday.
