Vancouver Canucks re-sign forward Chris Higgins to two-year, $3.8 million contract –NHL Update
Chris Higgins, a 28-year-old left wing player, finally settled down after two seasons of continuous moving from team to team as he signed a two-year, $3.8 million contract with Vancouver Canucks on Sunday, day-three of the 2011 National Hockey League's (NHL)
free agency.
From 2009 to 2011, Higgins had seen the likes of four teams, including New York Rangers for 55 games in which he registered 14 points, 6 goals and 8 assists, then Calgary Flames for another 12 games and three points, 2 goals and 1 assist.
In 2010, Higgins was shifted to Florida Panthers and played 48 games for 23 points, 11 goals and 12 assists, until finally moving on to Vancouver Canucks and participating in 14 matchups and potting five points, 2 goals and 3 assists.
Higgins never doubted that he would remain put in Vancouver after having a good 25-game postseason with them in which he put eight points with 4 goals and 4 assists on the board.
“When you’ve been on good teams and bad teams, you realize how much fun it is to win and you want to be part of a good team”, Higgins said about all the moving around he did. “I was never too worried about signing in Vancouver. I always thought it would
take place”.
A Smithtown, New York, United States native, Higgins was drafted as the 14th overall pick in round-one of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by Montreal Canadiens.
He played with his original draft team for five straight seasons until starting his moving process.
Montreal reached the playoffs three times with him on the team but never made it significantly deep into the playoffs.
Reaching the Stanley Cup Finals with Vancouver gave Higgins a new sense of inspiration.
“We made it to the final and to be a part of that was special ... Vancouver was my No. 1 choice when the season ended. I was really focused on making that happen and I’m glad it did”, Higgins said after signing onto with Canucks.
Higgins can expect to play a full season with Vancouver since his consistency is of no doubt when it comes to pressured moments.
