Vancouver Canucks re-sign forward Jannik Hansen to three-year, $4.05 million contract –NHL Update
Vancouver Canucks finally initialised the long awaited deal with young forward, Jannik Hansen, and signed him onto a long-term contract of three-years on Thursday, July 28, worth an estimated $4.05 million, in a move to avoid a salary arbitration hearing
which was scheduled for Friday morning in Toronto.
Hansen, a 25-year-old right winger from Herlev, Denmark, was chosen during the 2004 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft as the 287th overall pick during round-nine by Vancouver Canucks.
After playing his first five games during the 2007-2008 season with Vancouver, Canucks gave him another chance the following season.
Hansen did not disappoint, and put up 21 points (6 goals, 15 assists) in a total of 55 games played with a plus-minus rating of five.
Last season, the 6-foot-one, 195lbs forward played his first full 82-game season and scored a career high, 29 points (9 goals, 20 assists) and an impressive plus-minus rating of 13.
A team which has given him the chance to grow overtime, Hansen is happy that he struck a long-term deal with Vancouver.
"It is nice to get the three years and not have to worry about going through this every summer", Hansen said during a teleconference. "It is also nice knowing the team is willing to commit to myself for that extended period -- it is not just one year and
see how it goes".
Vancouver Canucks assistant general manager, Laurence Gilman, was also of the view that signing Hansen was in Vancouver’s interest.
"He's a guy that can produce more finish", Vancouver's assistant general manager Laurence Gilman said. "He's a guy that can score 15 to 20 goals a year. It's entirely up to Jannik, but we think it's possible".
Moving up in the ranks, Jannik Hansen will be making an average of $1.35 million each season, even though the exact figures are $1.6 million, $1.35 million and $1.1 million during the 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014 seasons respectively. It comes as a huge
boost from the $850,000 he made last season.
Last season was also the first time Hansen did not return to play with his American Hockey League (AHL) team, Manitoba Moose, and hopes that he will not have to anymore, since his position in the NHL is permanent.
