Vancouver Canucks rue timing of left wing Daniel Sedin injury, confirmed to be concussion-NHL News
Henrik Sedin, younger brother of the Vancouver Canucks’ left wing, Daniel Sedin, has demand tougher punishment of the players found guilty of fouls in concussions following Canucks’ admission that their star winger had a head injury last week.
It is rather disappointing for the player to suffer the setback at the time when the regular season is coming closer to its end and no one can better understand the gravity of his sufferings than the player’s brother, himself a star player.
Henrik said:
"On the ice, the referees should have an easier time giving out a few more minutes for the dangerous hits, I think -- elbows, boarding, charging and that kind of stuff. They're going to injure players.”
He added:
“Players are going to respect that more, maybe, than a one or two-game suspension, because if you hurt your team in a game and you lose because of a stupid play, that's going to hurt more in front of your teammates than, maybe, a one or two-game suspension."
Last week, Canucks attempted to play down the so called upper body injury of Henrik to be a concussion, but has now conceded it is so.
Canucks’ coach, Alain Vigneault, said that the injury does not come as a good development for the team and it will be difficult for them to keep the entire squad pulled up together.
Vigneault did not say anything further with regard to the player’s recovery and timeline for the possible comeback.
The coach said they were going to follow concussion protocols and will come up with information as and when it is available to them.
Sedin received an elbow hit to his head from Chicago Blackhawks’ defenseman, Duncan Keith, in the game on past Wednesday.
He was benched on the sidelines immediately and later inspected in the locker room. He did not return to the ice for rest of the game.
The team did not say much around the topic except for that the player suffered an upper body injury.
However, Blackhawks’ defenseman was suspended for five games and some reports claim that the punishment hints at Sedin’s injury being of a serious nature, most probably concussion.
Following the injury, the player’s brother has come up with rather serious views on the way those injuries are handled and consequent punishment of those who commit the foul.
He has demanded of the league office to introduce stricter penalty regimen against such injuries in order to promote players’ safety and security during the game.
Meanwhile, the team, while rueing over the timing of the injury, said they must be ready to cope with the situation arising out of the player’s absence.
Normally, injuries such as concussion take longer time for healing, recovery and rehabilitation. The major setback of such injuries is that the recovery process is unpredictable and there is a greater likelihood of recurrence of symptoms in the longer run.
