Vancouver Canucks stay atop with 4-2 win over Detroit Red Wings -NHL Update
Vancouver was on the brink of falling down in the Western Conference as St. Louis Blues won their contest on Wednesday night as well, but the Canucks managed to stay atop and moved even further up above Detroit by thrashing the Red Wings, 4-2, on December
21, 2011, at the sold out Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The Canucks now stand fourth in the West with 44 points while Detroit is right on their tale with 43 points to sit in fifth place.
The offensive line-up for Vancouver dominate the opening period with Christopher Higgins, Cody Hodgson and Alex Burrows getting a goal each while the others set up plays for them including the third goal initiated by both of the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel.
Higgins kicked off the scoring with his 10th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season followed by a quick answer from Cody Hodgson less than 20 seconds later to give Vancouver a commanding 2-0 lead only midway through the first.
Todd Bertuzzi finally put Detroit up on the scoreboard with his fourth with a wrap around with less than seven minutes to go while Alex Burrows kept the Vancouver momentum alive with his 13th at the 15:40 mark to conclude the scoring in round-one.
Drew Miller gave Detroit a much needed goal at the 16:20 mark of the second period to stay alive in the contest for his seventh of the season with the Red Wings entering the third and final 20 minutes of regulation down by one.
Kevin Bieksa gave Detroit an ample opportunity to score another goal nearly two minutes after Miller’s first of the night when he was booked for hooking at the 18:36 mark, but Vancouver luckily managed to kill it off.
Alexander Edler potted his sixth of the season 3:30 into the third on a shorthanded disadvantage when Ryan Kesler was called for roughing as the temperature in the arena rose, but Vancouver took the match as Detroit failed to add another goal throughout
the final period.
Vancouver is now on a three-game winning streak and will definitely be looking for a fourth when they host the Calgary Flames on Friday while Detroit has the next against Calgary as well a day earlier on Thursday.
