Vancouver Canucks walk into Ottawa and dismantle the Senators
The Vancouver Canucks had their way with the Ottawa Senators on Thursday 11 November coming away with a lopsided 6-2 victory.
How it happened
When Daniel Sedin scored just 22 seconds into the game, it was a sign of things to come for the Senators. Although the Sens tied it up at 1-1 just over three minutes later when Peter Regin scored his first of the season, it was all downhill from there.
Canucks forward Ryan Kesler scored the only goal of the second period before Vancouver opened up with four straight goals in the third. Alexandre Burrows, Tanner Glass, and Mario Bliznak all got their first goals of the season in the third period, while
Ryan Kesler scored his second of the game and and seventh on the year.
For Burrows, who had two points on the night, it was his first offensive contribution in the last five games since missing the start of the season due to off-season shoulder surgery.
With the score at 6-1 and well out of reach, the Senators did add a late consolation goal, just eight seconds after Bliznak had scored Vancouver's sixth, through Sergei Gonchar who scored his fourth of the year.
What they're saying
The Canucks had just had their six-game win streak snapped by the Montreal Canadiens only two days earlier, and the Canucks felt good about getting back on the winning track.
"It was a good bounce-back game," Kesler told reporters after the game.
"I thought the first period we were a little sloppy. We were turning over pucks. At the end of the first we kind of re-established ourselves by just chipping it in and making it a simple game."
It was also a special night for head coach Alain Vigneault, who collected his 300th win as a head coach in the NHL.
"Obviously for 300, I'm happy about that but I'm more happy about the two points we got tonight," said Vigneault, who became the 39th NHL coach to achieve the 300 win plateau, said after the game.
The Senators had previously been on fire, winning six of their last seven games. They now get set to take on a tough divisional opponent, the Boston Bruins, whom they are chasing for second spot in the Northeast Division, on Saturday 13 November.
The Canucks continue to lead the Northwest Division and will now continue their five-game road swing when they take on another Northeast Division opponent, the Toronto Maple Leafs, on Saturday night.
