Vanessa Mohr claims Women’s 100m butterfly gold: Day two - South African LC Nationals
Vanessa Mohr of NTS-NT claimed gold medal of the Women’s 100m butterfly on second day of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Tuesday, April 17.
The 17-year-old Mohr, who made her way into the final as second best swimmer, exceeded the expectations of her supporters by outsmarting her strongest challenger, Mandy T Loots in the playoff.
With her astonishing efforts, Mohr remained prominent for top position throughout the event and tapped the wall with the timing of 59.72 seconds for gold medal.
She was trailed by Loots, who failed to sustain her pace in the final round and settled on the finishing end as silver medallist with the timing of 59.81 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Marne Erasmus of BOR-BO, who remained 1.03 seconds behind her former finisher and clocked a timing of 1 minute and 00.84 seconds.
The 16-year-old Erasmus was chased by Ashley-Cooper of WPA-WP, who completed her race in fourth best place by producing a time of 1 minute and 02.67 seconds.
Following that, the crowd appreciated commendable efforts of their national star, Cameron van der Burgh in the Men’s 100m breaststroke playoff. The 23-year-old van der Burgh, who entered the final round as top contender for gold medal, elevated his pace in the playoff and sustained his place.
His gruelling effort remained prominently under the Olympic A-time qualification standard of 1 minute and 00.79 seconds as he posted 59.90 seconds for gold medal.
The champion was trailed by Neil Versfeld of KZNA-KZ, who stayed prominently behind his former finisher and posted a time of 1 minute and 00.99 seconds for silver medal.
Versfeld was chased by Giulio A Zorzi, who proved his mettle for third position of the discipline as he hit the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 02.61 seconds.
The fourth position of the event was secured by Rory L Buck of KZNA-KZ, who hit the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 02.85 seconds.
In addition, the session completed after the conclusion of all listed events in Men and Women’s corner.
