Vanessa Mohr clinches Girls 50m butterfly semi-final meet – 2011 FINA World Junior Championships
Vanessa Mohr of South Africa won the top qualification spot of the Girls 50m butterfly semi-final on the third day of the 2011 Federation Internationale De Natation scheduled 3rd World Junior Championships on Thursday, August 18, in Lima, Peru.
The 16-year-old Mohr, who dominated the preliminary round of the same event, maintained her top qualification spot and was the first swimmer to enter the final round, with a timing of 26.70 seconds. Mohr’s finest qualification effort was 0.07 seconds under
the previous championship mark of 26.77 seconds, set by Silvia Di Pietro of Italy during 2008. Her time was 1.63 seconds slower than the world record of 25.07 seconds, owned by Therese Alshammar of Sweden in 2009.
Mohr edged out her following swimmer, Farida Hisham Osman of Egypt, with a margin of 0.14 seconds, as Hisham Osman earned the second fastest qualification, with a timing of 26.84 seconds. The third best qualification spot was secured by Chanta Van Landeghem
of Canada, who was 0.07 seconds slower than her preceding swimmer and submitted an effort of 26.91 seconds.
In addition, with her fantastic finish, Van Landeghem defeated her closest competitor, Kendyl Stewart of United States, with a difference of 0.02 seconds, as Stewart posted a time of 26.93 seconds. Justine Bruno obtained the fifth fastest qualification spot
of the event, by completing her swim in a time of 26.94 seconds.
In the meantime, Daria Tcvetkova of Russia transpired as the sixth fastest finisher of the event, as she stayed 0.21 seconds slower than Bruno and reported in a time of 27.15 seconds. She was followed by Rino Hosoda of Japan, who claimed the seventh qualification
seat, by posting a time of 27.16 seconds. Hosoda was trailed by Nadiya Koba of Ukraine, who was the last swimmer to enter the final, as she clocked a time of 27.28 seconds.
The arena went wild with the championship record improving effort of Mohr, while these participants will compete with each other in the final round, where the top-three swimmers will be placed on the podium.
