Vanessa Mohr dominates 200m butterfly heats at the 2011 Telkom South Africa National Championship
Vanessa Mohr dominated her way in the preliminary rounds of the 200m butterfly on the last day of the 2011 Telkom South Africa National Championship. The 16-year-old, with her bold swim in the event, overcame her first hurdle to accomplish the 200m crown.
The championship will continue on the last day to finalise the South African Swimming Team for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
NTS-NT’s Mohr had an unmatchable start that provided her a lead from her competitors. She took herself-off the diving blocks in just 0.01 seconds and was joined by Mandy T Loots of CGA-CG in the middle of first lap. They both continued a ferocious battle,
whereas, Mohr managed to out-touch Loots on the first turn, posting a time of 30.46 seconds against Loots’s 30.68 seconds effort.
In the next lap, Loots turned in a dynamic swim of 34.69 seconds effort to post 1:05.37 seconds on the board, while Mohr posted a 36.68 seconds effort to post 1:07.14 minutes. Her sluggish swim in the second lap gave a chance to Bianca Meyer, who pounced
on her shoulder after completing the second lap in 36.05 seconds, to post a 1:07.21 minutes swim.
The tables turned in the third lap, where Loots dominated with her 37.34 seconds effort and moved to the fastest spot in 1:42.71 minutes. Meyer touched the wall for the second place, completing her lap in 35.67 seconds to post 1:42.88 minutes, while Mohr
surfaced third in 36.78 seconds, posting a time of 1:43.92 minutes on the board. They were followed by Christopher Lategan, who touched the wall for the fourth place in a time of 1:44.93 minutes.
Mohr made a splash into the final lap to clock a 35.40 seconds effort. Her fastest final lap moved her to the top qualification spot in a time of 2:19.32 minutes, ahead of Meyer and Lategan, who touched the wall in 37.51 and 35.72 seconds to post timings
of 2:20.39 and 2:20.65 minutes, respectively. Loots failed to sustain her position and ended fourth, clocking 39.00 seconds to post 2:21.71 minutes on the board.
These swimmers will face each other in the final round of the 200m butterfly at the final session of the championship. South Africa Swimming will also announce the national team to compete at the 2011 World Championships after the completion of this championship.
