Vania King: a look at the US Open doubles champ this season
Born on February 3, 1989 in the city of California, Vania King is a professional tennis player from America. The twenty-one year old Vania has recently won the United States Open doubles title along with her partner Yaroslava Shvedova in New York. King has also captured the Wimbledon women’s doubles crown this season at the All England Club.
As far as her performances this year are concerned, the American tennis star started the season by contesting at the Brisbane International as her first competition of 2010. She made her way into the second round of the singles championship, after beating Sybille Bammer, however, eventually lost to Andrea Petkovic in a total of three sets. The final match score was 4–6 6–2 6–1. In the doubles contest, she was teamed up with Anna-Lena Gronefeld, however, couldn’t even win her opening round match against Garbin/Bacsinszky.
Vania along with Gronefeld next played at the Medibank International tennis tournament which was held in Sydney as seeded fourth to win the doubles crown. They managed to defeat Coin/ Amanmuradova and Voracova/ Uhlirova before falling down in the semi final round at the hands of Nadia/Garbin in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6–3 7–5. In the singles competition, the American, however, failed to qualify, losing in the opening round of the qualifying competition to top seeded tennis foe, Agnes Szavay, who later one toppled Jelena Jankovic in the opening round of the championship.
At the Australian Open tennis tournament, Vania did well to upset the world number twenty-three, Dominika Cibulkova in the first round of the competition in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6–3 6–7(5) 7–5. The right handed player, however, couldn’t replicate her winning performance in the next round and was defeated by Roberta Vinci in a two setter clash.The final match score was 7–6(7) 7–5. In the doubles competition, the California resident was teamed up with Gronefeld again as seeded number fourteen to win the title. They however, lost the second round by Victoria/ Kuznetsova in a three setter clash. The final match score was 6–3 4–6 6–3.
King's next participation was the Memphis international during the month of February. She entered the singles competition as seeded number seven, however, was dismissed in the second round by Sofia Arvidsson from Sweden in a total of three sets. The final match score was 3–6 6–4 6–2. In the doubles contest, the American along with her partner Michaella Krajicek captured the trophy without even dropping a single set, overpowering Shaughnessy/ Mattek-Sands in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7–5 6–2.
At the BNP Paribas tournament which was held in Indian Wells, the professional tennis player from the United States of America, Vania King was eliminated in the second round by the second seeded foe, Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark in a three setter clash. The final match score was 5–7 6–2 6–4.
The 1.65 meters tall King next competed at the 2010 French Open tennis tournament where she couldn’t even reach the second round of the competition as she was overpowered by Bethanie Mattek-Sands in a total of two sets. The final match score was 2–6 2–6. She took part in the mixed doubles event along with Christopher Kas and successfully made her way into the semi final rounds before falling at the hands of Knowle/ Shvedova in a two setter clash. The final match score was 4–6 4–6.
In women's doubles, King once again teamed up with Michaella Krajicek and was defeated in the round two by the fourth seeded duo, Stosur/ Nadia in a total of three sets.
At 2010 Wimbledon championship, the February born King captured the 2010 Women’s Doubles title in straight sets along with her partner Yaroslava Shvedova. They got the better of Russian duo, Vera Zvonareva and Elena Vesnina in the title battle. The final match score was 7–6(6), 6–2.
In more recent news, the professional tennis star, Vania King along with Yaroslava Shvedova has captured the United States Open doubles title after surpassing Nadia Petrova and Liezel Huber in a total of three sets. The final match score was 2–6, 6–4, 7–6(4).
