Vania King stomps over Irina Falconi to enter quarters – Citi Open 2012
In an all-American affair, fourth seeded Vania King dumped her compatriot, Irina Falconi, in straight sets at the Citi Open 2012 on Wednesday. She summed up a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory against the world number 104 to occupy a spot in the quarter-finals at the
William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington D.C., United States.
King warded off late resistance to outsmart the 22-year-old in their first encounter at this outdoor hard court event taking place from 28th July to 5th August. After sealing the deal in one hour and 57 minutes, the seed not only edged
in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against Falconi but also powered into the final eight.
The 23-year-old American stated in a post match courtside interview:
"We both changed our game styles a little bit during that match. In the beginning she was putting the ball in the court, waiting for me to miss, and I was missing. I was kind of seeing how she was playing, getting used to it, putting her on the defensive.
She started playing much more aggressive in the second set, which forced me to play more aggressive also. Overall we played at a good level. I thought it was a very good match. I am really happy I ended up pulling ahead in the second set."
The seed made a sloppy entry at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament. She suffered the first blow in the opening game and went 0-1 down. However, King made a fitting reply as she reeled off the following four games in a row
and took a 4-1 lead. After Falconi kept her serve in the sixth game, the higher ranked American bagged the last two games and clicked the opener with a 6-2 win.
Ranked 55th in the WTA Premier Rankings, King held her composure in the second set. She exchanged three serve breaks and took the set to a tie-breaker. The American seed dominated in it and eventually pocketed the set with a 7-6(5) score line.
Next up for King is her seventh seeded compatriot, Coco Vandeweghe. The wildcard American eased past the French qualifier, Aravane Rezai, in straight sets to set up this meeting.
