Vania King trounces Heather Watson in the opening round – PTT Pattaya Open 2012
A former top-50, America’s Vania King, tumbled over the British youngster, Heather Watson, in straight sets at the PTT Pattaya Open 2012 on Tuesday. She earned a 6-4, 6-2 success against the 19-year-old to advance into the second round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event held in Pattaya City, Thailand.
Eighth seed proved his class at the Dusit Thani hotel and overcame the British teenager in their first outing. After this one and half hour long epic encounter, King rightfully earned the limelight and took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the world number 106. The American not only booked a spot in the round of 16 but also inched closer to bag the prize money.
King, ranked 59th in the WTA rankings, stormed into the Thai hard courts and drew the first blood in the opening game of the match. She then fired angled shots from her box of tricks and plucked in entire serves, ultimately clinching the set with a 6-4 score line.
The American kept her rhythm in the last set and held her serve in the second game. After the British held her serve in the third game, King unveiled her true form and went on a five games rampage. The highly positive star blocked the only breakpoint she came across and cashed in two out of three break chances to seal the set by winning six games to two.
The 23-year-old will next face the Russian blooming star, Alla Kudryavtseva, who slaughtered the Chinese qualifier, Yi-Miao Zhou, with a breadstick to set-up this date.
Vera Zvonareva also faced a similar fate earlier that day. The top seed dumped the local qualifier, Varatchaya Wongteanchai, in straight sets an hour and 35-minutes long marathon.
The Russian made an exceptional start as she drew the first blood in the second game and went 2-0 up. Regardless of losing her serve in the very next game, she converted two more break chances to her advantage to win the set with an assuring 6-2 score line.
Zvonareva lost her serve twice in the following set but broke the Thai’s serve three times to bag the set by winning seven games to five.
