Vania King upsets Marion Bartoli in 2nd round – Hansol Korea Open 2011
Number two seeded and wildcard entrant Marion Bartoli lost to American Vania King during the pair’s second round match at the 2011 Hansol Korea Open in Seoul on Wednesday, 21st September. After one hour and fifty three
minutes of the match American King won in straight sets of 6-3, 7-5 victory.
After winning the pitch, Bartoli opted to serve first and was successfully able to hold her serve in the first game. She then went on to breaking her opponent in the second and by holding her serve in the third was leading 3-0.
Although, a little late in the match King finally realized and kicked back into the set in the fourth game and held her serve for the first time. By the fifth game Bartoli was broken for the first time by King and the American
was able to equalize the score to 3-3.
During the remaining three games King shifted to top gear, as she was able to break her adversary in the seventh game. After holding her serve in the eighth game, she was waiting to win the match point on Bartoli’s serve in the
ninth game and she grabbed the first opportunity to conquer Bartoli by forcing an error from her to conquer an easy victory of 6-3.
The second was opened by King and she successfully placed herself on the score board by smashing an ace at 40-30. During the following seven games, the two kept winning on their serves but in the ninth game King was first to break.
However, the French (Bartoli) did not want the American to take the competitive edge and broke back and equalized the score at 5-5. Finally, King again went on to breaking her opponent in the eleventh game en-route to her victory
in the twelfth.
It was the biggest upset of the day when Vania King defeated Marion Bartoli in a straight sets victory and was able to secure a place in the quarterfinal where she will be facing.
