Vanity Handicap 2011 - Blind Luck wins under Garrett Gomez- Birthday gift for Jerry Hollendorfer
Jerry Hollendorfer couldn’t have wished for a better present on his 65th birthday then landing the $250,000 Grade One Vanity Handicap by his magnificent four year old chestnut filly, Blind Luck.
The filly is known for her brilliant knack of turning the tables when she is totally written off in the race and pulling off something as extraordinary as a win when she looks down and out.
The daughter of Pollard’s Vision was after her sixth Grade One victory in the Vanity Handicap against six other fillies and mares, who would grind it out against, Blind Luck, and the other favourite, Switch.
Blind Luck recently landed the La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs, and was expected to win the Vanity Handicap.
She is the favourite that leaves it till really late and makes it hard for the betters to actually put money on her because her runs are almost unpredictable but she doesn’t disappoint.
Blind Luck has a crazy knack of clearing out the field and appearing in big races and winning most of them with late dramatic runs. The Vanity Handicap was Blind Luck’s eleventh win out of twenty starts.
The high flying filly, Switch, was dazzled when Blind Luck made a powerful run from last position and danced passed her competition to win the race by one and a half length. Switch finished runner-up
It was a jaw dropping performance by the star filly, as she ripped the race track apart, when she made her unbelievable run from the back to the front with determination to cross the wire first. She had seen the back of her rivals enough and it seemed as if she decided that she had to bring her A game and stun everyone.
Garrett Gomez, the filly’s mount, seemed he had a few tricks up his sleeves when the going got tough but more importantly he had faith in Blind Luck capabilities. Maybe Gomez was leaving it late so she had enough in the tank to cover the 1 1/8 mile distance. It was a great win in the end for Garrett Gomez and Jerry Hollendorfer.
Blind Luck’s final time was 1 minute and 50.89 seconds, as she won the most prestigious race, on 18 June
It was the second straight win for Blind Luck and it will help her build momentum before her big show down against Havre de Grace, who is known as the filly’s, biggest rival.
They will battle it out and see who will win the $750,000 Delaware Handicap. The race will be run on Delaware Park on 16 July, 2011.
