Vanuatu pair finds glory at the 2012 FIVB Seoul Challenger in Korea – Volleyball news
The 2012 FIVB Seoul Challenger Women’s Beach Volleyball Tournament concluded on a happy note last Sunday.
Korean city of Seoul accommodated the participants of the campaign for four days and created an excellent environment for a great competition.
The visiting duo of Miller Elwin and Henriette Iatika from Vanuatu stole the show with their stellar performance on the final day of the tournament. They performed a consistently in the final showdown and overpowered competitors Kira Walkenhorst-Geeske Banck
from Germany. The final set scores of the final match were 26-24, 23-21.
Large number of local and international fans gathered to watch the exhilarating action of beach volleyball. The final match was a heated competition, where both teams played to their full potential. The scoring remained tight from start to end, while Vanuatu
tandem finished both sets with just narrow margin.
In the first frame, Elwin-Latika had to fight a great battle with German counterparts, who used all their power to turn the game in their favour. Nonetheless, Team Vanuatu edged out the Germans with two-point lead at 26-24. The second set featured the same
action. Both teams exchanges long rallies and traded lead during the set. Finally, Elwin and Latika proved their supremacy on Korean sand and closed the match by posting 23-21 in the second set.
Overall, the duo of Elwin and Latika put up a superb show of beach volleyball. Earlier in the day, they were challenged by another German team that consisted of Chantal Laboureur and Christine Aulenbrock. It was the first semi-final match, which spanned
over three sets. The German ladies used the advantage of their better physique and claimed the opening set of the match.
Elwin and Latika came into action in the following set. They played skilfully and managed to overcome the Germans in the second set, which ended at 21-17. In the decisive third set, German pair came really close to win the match but final victory graced
Elwin and Latika as they claimed third set (16-14).
Likewise, Germany’s Walkenhorst and Banck defeated Wang Fan and Yuan Yue from China in second semi-final and joined the finalist duo.
In addition to two semi-finals and the final match, the last day of 2012 FIVB Seoul Challenger Women’s Beach Volleyball Tournament also featured a classification match. The two losing teams of the semi-finals came into contest for the bronze-ware.
In the third-position match, German Laboureur and Aulenbrock held off Chinese Yuan and Wang for 2-1 (18-21, 21-19, 15-13) and claimed bronze.
