Varatchaya Wongteanchai downs Misa Eguchi in final round qualies – PTT Pattaya Open 2012
Seeded at number four in the qualifying draw, 22-year-old local contestant, Varatchaya Wongteanchai, registered a comprehensive victory over the fifth seeded Japanese teenager, Misa Eguchi, on Monday. The fourth seed took one hour
and 22 minutes to take the better of her opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to book a spot in the main rounds of the PTT Pattaya Open, being played in Pattaya City, Thailand.
It was an exciting contest between the two youngsters. The 19-year-old Japanese contender proved to be a bit inexperienced for the guile and cunning game play of Wongteanchai. The fourth seed had already defeated the Japanese on
two prior occasions before their Monday’s encounter and was riding a physiological advantage of a 2-1 head-to-head lead over her. Wongteanchai proved herself a better player in every segment of the game and gave away limited opportunities to Eguchi to have
an impact on the game.
The Thai competitor delivered 60 per cent of her serve on target and reeled off 22 out of 31 first serve points in the match to drive her opponent out of the competition with ease. She crafted a total of 11 break opportunities
in the contest but only five conversions were sufficient for her to clinch victory. Eguchi, on the other hand, had three break points in the match and she cashed in two of them, which were certainly not good enough to contain the belligerence of her opponent.
The opening four games of the match went past without much drama and the scores reached 2-2. Things started to heat up when Wongteanchai nailed the first serve break of the day in the fifth game, only to be broken in the very next
game to fall back to 3-3. She was very strong with winning return points in the game and kept pressing her opponent to cough unforced errors. Eguchi obliged and a crucial double fault in the ninth game awarded a break point to Wongteanchai. The fourth seed
then served out of the opening set at 6-4, getting one up in the contest.
Eguchi dropped serve once again in the very first game of the next set but recovered immediately to break back at 1-1. A regular game was followed to take the scores to 3-3 before Wongteanchai launched her onslaught. She stung
two consecutive break points to race away to victory at 6-3, booking a berth in the main round of the PTT Pattaya Open.
