Question:

Various vocal range questions?

I'm not the most educated person in this area, but I've heard that I have a nice voice.

1) What are the different types of vocal ranges? I know one is soprano...

2) What's my vocal range? I can't hit high notes, and my voice can sometimes gives out during a low note. But I can keep a note going for a while. I can sing along to a lot of Paramore songs, and Rehab's "Sitting at a bar," is no problem for me.

3) How do I improve my vocal range without taking lessons? As I said, I'm not educated. If you could list some websites or things I need to learn I'd be one happy camper!

:)

  2. 1) the ranges from top (female) to bottom (male) are:

soprano, mezzo-soprano (which in Italian means "half soprano"), alto (there are female altos and male altos. The BeeGees sound is like a male alto), tenor, baritone and bass.

    2) you won't ever really know your real vocal range until you train your voice. Sounds like you are a mid range singer.

    3) it's nearly impossible to become a singer without lessons. Unlike learning other instruments, you need someone to listen to you in order to give you help. If you are listening to yourself while you are singing, that's not good. Then you are only focusing on what has come out of your mouth instead of the process of what you need to do to sing. Can you read notes? I'm sure you can find a book (online or in a shop) that will explain the fundamentals of singing. Why don't you want to have lessons? If it's a question of money, just put a sign up at your local university's music dept. I'm sure a student would gladly teach you at a very low price!

Otherwise, you can record yourself, analyze the recording, and then try and teach yourself. But if you don't know what you need to listen for, it's nearly impossible.
