Question:

Varminit Hunting. (coyotes mainly)?

This year i am going down to Montana to do a Mule deer hunt and im bringing a 270. win with 150 grain. I am also doing a coyote hunt while im down there and also get some praire dogs. I am either going to get a 22-250. or a 223.

Everyone keeps telling me to get the 223. because it is a more commonly used cartridge so the bullets are cheaper and easier to find. The 22-250. is faster and flatter shooting cartridge. The 223. has a bigger bullet, but a 55 grain for coyote and praire dogs are prefect.

Which one do you think i should get? And why? I want one of those too and i dont want to use my 270. on either the coyote or the praire dog.

  1. I don't see anything wrong with using the 270 as a coyote rifle if you're worried about killing power. that might help you make a decision on which 22cal to buy.

The 223 does have much cheaper ammo than the 22-250. You might shoot 500-1000 rounds at prarie dogs and the difference in cost will likely be a couple hundred dollars. I concider that vacation so just add that to the cost of the trip. What makes the real difference is how much you shoot back home. If you're going to go to your range and use this as almost a plinking gun, you almost have to get a 223. If you're only going to fire a couple boxes a year, then the 22-250 would be fine.

The benifit of the 22-250 is the trajectory and it will be less affected by the wind. If you're shooting over 300 yards, I'd pick that. The downfall would be the barrel heat as it will heat up faster than a 223.

Talk to who ever you're going with. With prarie dogs, you can get as close or as far away as you want. If your buddy is content on making 200-300 yard shots --- I would absolutly go with a 223. If he's wanting to shoot 400-500 yards or more then I'd be looking at a 22-250 to "keep up with him".

  2. .223 or 22-250

    Hmmm.....

    .223...many reasons

  3. A .223 will annihilate any animal of those sizes.  l don't believe coyotes are varmint.  lf you want to hunt them w/ a belligerent vengeance, use the .223.

  4. i dont know why it would be perfect practice !!!!!!!!!!

    the 270!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. I will be the first to say I prefer the .223 but will admit the 22-250 is a better cartridge... The 22-250 has a farther reach than the .223.... Thats not to say a .223 is a slug either. A marksman that knows his rifle in .223 will still outshoot a less experienced hunter using a rifle chambered in .22-250..... I like the .223 because its a little less expensive and my carbines are chambered in it also..... No sense having my varmint bolt action rifles use a different cartridge than my AR and Mini 14 rifles..... But thats what works for me...  If your buying a new rifle and dont mind the additional costs of the 22-250 then by all means purchase that..... I like to target shoot and do most of my varmint shoots under 300 yards so the .223 in bulk works out great.....

  6. .223 or if u want to go out of the box a .17HMR or a .22WM

  7. Actually you are forgetting about the 222 caliber, it is very close to the same performance as the 22-250.* I have both and use both, and I can't see any difference in their performance.* Now either pick the 222 or the 22-250.* You can't make a mistake by picking either one.* Forget about the 223, because the 22-250 will out perform the 223 and the 222 will also.*

  8. go for a 223 ruger mini14 not much money and great power for a small gun like that because that is what i use deer hunting and i am 11 and have killed 4 deer with it

  9. So long as the biggest game you are hunting is coyote the .223 will work well.  An advantage is that if you intend to keep the pelt the FMJ .223 will damage it less.  Otherwise using the soft-points.
