Know i have decided that i want either the 22-250 or the 204. ruger. Most people keep telling me that i should get the 223. but i dont want it and pretty soon i will have one givin to me by my dad. I still want either the 22-250. or the 204. ruger.

Most people say the 22-250 is way better then the 204. but the ballistics are pretty close. At long ranges the 204. could be affected by the wind but that the only major difference. I know alot about the 22-250. but i dont know alot about the 204. Can anyone tell me stuff about it and which i should get and why?

  1. .22-250 all the way is a proven varmint gun and is faster than all get out. you can load them heavy or light. shoot extremely flat and have a short action. the .204 is ok but i think in due time it will faid away and shells might be hard to find so stick with an easy to find round that is my advise.

  2. I would go with the .243 win. this is one of the best all around guns for varmints and deer although the .223, 22-250 & .204 are all fine varmint rounds the .243 is just more versatile.

  3. My reasoning has always been, do I really want a rifle whose bore diameter is even smaller than a .22s?  My answer is, no, I don't need a rifle that I need to buy a special cleaning rod for.  If all you're going to shoot is varmint the .22-250 will do it all.  If you want to save money on ammo go with the .223 which also will do it all as far as varmints are concerened.  None of these are big game guns though.  If you intend to hunt deer you might as well just get a .243 Winchester.  This is a good varmint gun and the minimum deer gun.

    Happy hunting.

  4. I say the .22-250 is the caliber to get, I don't see any improvement with the .204 over the .22-250, if you wanted something better/faster get either a .220 Swift or the fastest that i know of the .223 WSM, I would directly skip the .204, out of all the varmint calibers I think the .22-250 is THE best.  Reasons: its been around a long time, its still one of the fastest, most accurate factory calibers available, and bullet/ammo selection is WAY better for .22 caliber than the relatively new .204, I just don't see the niche for the .204, either get a .17 Rem. or get a .22 caliber.

  5. true...223 is a good choice, but also an expensive one...and it's also an assault round...how much longer will ammo be available??  My choice would be a ruger 10/22.  22lr is enough to take any varmint and ammo is cheap cheap cheap.  You can pick up a 10/22 for about $200 from most sporting goods stores.  That way you can spend more money on good optics.  I upgraded my 10/22 with a bull barrel, harris bi-pod and a nice scope.  It's a tack driver at 100 yards and it won't break the bank.  Happy hunting.
