Question:

Varnishing over crystals?

Does anyone know if there is a product out there (preferably available in the UK) which is suitable for varnishing over crystals? I am currently encrusting a piece of glass using 4mm flat-backs and Gem-Tac and wondered if there was anything that could be used after it is completed to seal the crystals in place - just for extra security really without losing the sparkle. Any ideas? Thanks!

  1. I would advise to dip the completed glass covered in crystals in a poly acrylic clear sealer = available at all home improvement stores,  paint stores etc.

The poly acrylic will not yellow as varnish would.

Dipping will ensure a even coat - and hang upside down to dry.  = create a hanging system first before you dip

for example> turning over on a dowel, or suspend with wire = dont know the shape or size of your project so you will have to decide how to let it dry.  Upside down will prevent pooling on the base -

good luck - sounds like a really neat project.

  2. I would recommend against it.  I have worked with crystals a lot, and anything you put over them will take some of the sparkle away, because the light will not reflect off of then the same way.  Even it it's transparent.  I would just keep some extra crystals on the side and if a couple fall off you will have matching ones to replace them with.
