Question:

Varsity tennis tryouts tomorrow - help?

I'm not even a freshman yet, but the coach requested that I try out for the Varsity team. I know I'm not as good as a lot of the players who'll be trying out, and I'm really nervous about doing badly! I couldn't say no, but he's kind of forcing me to ruin my reputation with the upperclassmen. Help!

  1. practice before! i am a varsity tennis player and have been since freshman year. if you dont make varsity, you'll be on JV. that is fine because you will learn and get better and eventually be on varsity. if you arent that good, would you have any fun losing varsity matches all the time? so maybe waiting till you are better or the JV team will be best. but make sure you try your hardest. dont let them get to you. be friendly and pleasant. if the coach requested you do, maybe he needs more players...or knows you are good enough! just pretend that nobody is watching you when you are trying out. or pretend that someone you like is watching you. or that the other people are watching you. whatever will make you feel better. be confident!!!! you can do it =)

  2. If he asked you to try out, there must be some reason why.  Maybe the team doesn't have alot of depth on the girl's side of the squad.  Lots of HS tennis team have that problem.  There IS room for at least SEVEN girls on every standard HS tennis squad, so if I were you, I'd give it a shot.  You don't have to be the BEST girl on the team, just to make the squad. :)

  3. We have lost the match before it begun because our mind said so.  Develop a mental strength vis-a-vis with your acquired skill.  Make it (the try-out or any) a challenge - a test on how far you learned after those hours of practice. Be confident; you have nothing to lose or be scared of.  Tennis players knew how they struggled before to learn  and still struggling in times of competition.  You are no different from them.
