Varvara Lepchenko crushes Anabel Medina Garrigues to reach quarters – KDB Korea Open 2012
Seeded sixth in this event, Varvara Lepchenko from United States devastated the Spanish star, Anabel Medina Garrigues, with a breadstick at the KDB Korea Open Tennis Championship 2012 on Thursday. She penned down a 6-4, 6-1 victory against the world number
38 to secure a place in the final eight at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event held in South Korea.
The Uzbek-born Lepchenko showed top notch performance to outfox Medina Garrigues in straight sets at the Seoul Olympic Tennis Center. After recording this victory in one hour and 17 minutes, Lepchenko took lead in the head-to-head series by 2-1 against the
Spanish veteran and progressed into the quarter-finals.
Lepchenko high-spiritedly entered this outdoor hard court event. She smoothly bagged her entire serves without facing any barrier. The American capitalised on one out of five break opportunities and consequently clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 21st in the WTA Premier Rankings, Lepchenko perfected her winning ways in the following set. She ruled throughout the set and eventually bagged a breadstick. The American kept her entire serves without facing any breakpoint and converted
three out of seven break chances to earn the glory.
Summing up performance of the 26-year-old, Lepchenko fired four aces to prevail. She produced a slightly better first serve share of 63 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 62 per cent and amazingly marked 21 out of 24 points on it. The American also capitalised
on three double faults Medina Garrigues spilled and ended the match with 65 points.
Next up for the left-handed American is the Austrian challenger, Tamira Paszek. The Austrian slaughtered the local wild card entrant, So-Ra Lee, with a bagel in 50 minutes. Paszek was broken once but she cashed in six out of seven break chances to manipulate
a 6-2, 6-0 success.
The eighth seed, Ekaterina Makarova, will join Lepchenko in the final eight. The Russian dumped the American qualifier, Jamie Hampton, in straight sets in one hour and 39 minutes. She amazingly dusted away six out of seven breakpoints she faced and broke
her rival’s serve four times to pull out the victory.
