Vasco Vascotto of Samba Pa Ti reveals key to their success at the 2011 Melges 32 Worlds in Palma Bay
A consistent impressive performance from John Kilroy and tactician Vasco Vascotto on Samba Pa Ti brought them on top of the standings at the end of Day 2 of 2011 Melges 32 Worlds. The event is being hosted by the Real Club Nautico de Palma (RCNP), at Palma
de Mallorca, in Spain. Tactician, Samba Pa Ti Vascotto believes that remaining relaxed during the race is their key to success.
Both, Kilroy and Vascotto had a low sail in the first race as the duo took 10th place, but they bounced back in the second race brilliantly and managed to win it. They are currently leading the overall standings of the event with 17 points. They
are seven points ahead of second placed, Lanfranco Cirillo and Michele Paoletti, who earned 24 points after a third and a second place in the second day’s races.
The overall lead of John Kilroy and Vasco Vascotto is due to a consistent sail on both days. Vascotto believes this success is due to their relaxed temperament.
While speaking to local media at the end of second day’s races, Vascotto said, “The key to our success is to remain relaxed when we race, and realize that when something is not working, know how to fix it. We are lucky that we had a good comeback in race
one today. The second race was obviously different. It was easier. We had a beautiful start, nice speed, and caught the shift.”
He added, “We have the right attitude on the boat right now. We work hard when we get behind. When we are in front, we work to be nice and smart. We don't feel as though we are really all that better than any of the other teams racing, we respect the other
28 boats around us and their potential.”
